You’ve heard me mention my father, Walter, and how he’s played a role in my business for such a long time. It probably started when I was a little girl. My father was born in New York and has had a VERY diverse employment history. He was a medic in the Army, he drove a taxi cab in New York City, he was in military intelligence, he worked for the United States Post Office and he finally retired from hotel management having worked at the Sheraton for MANY years. In fact, the Sheraton wanted to send him manager training school. While at the Sheraton, my father was treated like royalty. He was always provided with the best meals, a very nice car and doors were always opened for him. He was (and still is) Walter Bernstein, after all.

Now he did go on to work with his brother in law after retirement (the man couldn’t sit still) doing residential and commercial management. He moved us to Tampa in 1987.

Here’s what’s important about this. My father worked with and for various people. He has to be able to mold adapt to different leadership styles and eventually, craft his own management style. He was an example to me of what a “people person” really was and is.

I guess that’s where my love for HR really began.

Until next time.
